This family garden had become overgrown and unloved, like so many, due to busy family life. I was asked to design and build a new area with something for everyone.
The garden was split into separate spaces – a play area for a new trampoline, decking for the family to sit and relax, a new border with low maintenance planting and colour, all finished off with a new lawn and new fencing. There was a large oak tree stump in the garden and my clients were keen to keep it but unsure how – I decided to make a “floating table”, giving the impression that the tree is pushing the table up from the decking, with up-lighters in the deck itself for added effect. I used the space at the side of the house for a kitchen garden, creating 3 new-built raised beds, two for veg and one for herbs, with relevant soil in each.
The final request (from Ben, their 7-year-old son) was for a plum tree, which fitted in perfectly. My final addition of pots and lighting to the decking, pathway and new border, including separate switches on one panel enabling a choice of lights to fit the mood, meant that I, and the family, were extremely pleased with the finished garden.
