How to keep your tree healthy
Here’s my top 10 tips to make sure your tree stays healthy.
1. Where possible buy as fresh as you can, even better is to cut your own down. It’s quite good fun and you can see it open and not already bagged up, no bottom heavy issues when you get home !
2. If you do buy pre-cut make sure you cut at least an inch off the bottom before taking it in the house, this opens the pores and encourages the tree to drink. You can also put the tree in warm water first, this also opens the pores up.
3. Try not to have sudden changes in temperature, if it’s very cold outside and hot inside your home leave the tree in a porch or garage for an hour or so so it can adjust easier.
4. Place the tree away from direct heat (Fires, radiators etc) this will dry it out much quicker and the tree won’t last very long!
5. Give it LOTS of water, this is THE main thing to do, almost all trees are under-watered and this causes the needles to drop, on average a tree will drink between 2 & 3 pints of water a day, if it dry’s out you’ll need to saw off another inch, which is a pain if the tree is decorated !
6. Add a little sugar to the water, this can benefit the tree.
7. Plant the tree in direct water, not soil or sand. Soil and sand will block the trees pores and limit the amount of water being drunk.
8. Don’t spray the tree with hairspray, all this will do is waste hairspray, make the tree stink of hairspray and make the tree flammable !
9. Turn off the lights at night time and when you’re out, the heat from the lights can dry the tree out.
10. All trees will keep there needles well if you keep the water topped up, WATER, WATER, WATER !
